Navigating AER Directive 60: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting
As of April 21, 2021, AER’s Directive 60 has created environmentally friendly requirements on the petroleum industry for flaring, incinerating, and venting in Alberta wells and facilities.
These requirements have high consideration for public safety and environmental impacts, ensuring industry-leading companies meet future-forward standards and can be held accountable.
“The AER’s goal is to have the upstream petroleum industry continue to reduce the volume of solution gas routinely flared, incinerated, and vented. Requirements in this directive are aligned to ensure compliance with Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives and Guidelines.”
– AER Directive 060, Section 2: Solution Gas Management
To ensure the sustainability of this higher expectation, each facility must submit an annual methane emissions report electronically. Below are the areas assessed.
Petrinex vs. OneStop vent gas reporting
Pneumatic Devices vent gas reporting
Compressor vent gas reporting
Methane concentration
Fugitive reporting
Pending 2020 Submissions
To learn more about each of these areas you can review the Directive 060 Annual Methane Emissions Report – 2020 Data Quality Letter below.
In this letter, you can find AER’s data quality assurance process and an overview of the new requirements coming into effect in the next reporting years.
